advocātio, ōnis, f. (advoco), das Herbeirufen, Berufen; dah. prägn., als t.t. = die Berufung von Sachverständigen zu gemeinsamer Beratung über schwierige Angelegenheiten, I) im allg., Cic. II. Verr. 1, 129. – II) insbes.: a) in abstr., die Berufung von sachverständigen Rechtsgelehrten zur Beratung, die juristische Beratung, in advocationibus, als Rechtsanwalt, Cic. ep. 7, 10, 2. – u. seitdem die advocati zur Kaiserzeit als wirkliche Prozeßführer auftraten = die Prozeßführung, der Beistand vor Gericht, die Anwaltschaft, Quint. u.a. – in der Verbindung advocationem postulare, petere, dare, consequi = die Gelegenheit, Erlaubnis, Frist, eine juristische Beratung mit Sachverständigen zu halten oder (zur Kaiserzeit) sich juristischen Beistand zu verschaffen, Cic. u. Sen. – u. übtr., übh. Überlegungszeit, Aufschub, Frist, Sen. u.a. – b) in concr., meton. = die zur Beratung berufenen Sachverständigen, sowohl die zur Beratung gezogenen und vor Gericht mit anwesenden Rechtsgelehrten, als auch die beratenden Freunde, Beistände, übh., der Beistand, die Hilfe, Cic. u.a. – zur Kaiserzeit, der Sachwalterstand, die Anwaltschaft, spät. ICt.
