2. gestio, īvī u. iī, ītum, īre (gestus, ūs), I) Gebärden machen, Gesichter schneiden, Gell. 11, 13, 10. – II) prägn., durch Haltung u. Bewegung des Körpers Empfindungen, bes. Freude u. Verlangen, zu erkennen geben, sich freudig od. verlangend gebärden, a) freudig = vor Freude ausgelassen sein, in ausgelassene Freude ausbrechen, sich ausgelassen freuen, frohlocken, vor Freude übermütig sein, laetitiā, Cic.: voluptate nimiā, Cic.: gestientes otio, durch die Ruhe übermütig, Liv.: quid gestiam? Ter.: übtr., laetitia efferatur et gestiat, Cic.: laetitia gestiens, ausgelassene Freude, Cic.: so auch animus gestiens rebus secundis, im Glücke übergreifendes G., Liv. – v. Tieren, aves gestiunt, regen sich munter, Col.: quae (animalia) ut sunt edita ex utero, protinus in pedes suos erigi et gestire discursibus, Lact. – übtr., dialogorum libertate, frei ausschweifen in der Gesprächsform, Quint. 10, 5, 15. – b) verlangend = sein ganzes Dichten und Trachten auf etwas richten, ganz von dem Verlangen beseelt sein, das lebhafte Verlangen haben, seine größte Lust daran haben, m. Acc., nescio quod scelus gestiens, im Schilde führend, Apul. met. 8, 13: fasces, quos populus tribuit, quāre gestiuntur, heftig begehrt werden, Schol. Bern. Verg. georg. 2, 495. – m.
