Antiochus, ī, m. (Ἀντίιχος), I) Name von 13 syrischen Königen, von denen am bekanntesten: a) Ant. II., Sohn des Antiochus I. Soter, durch seine verstoßene Gemahlin Laodice ermordet (247 v. Chr.), Val. Max. 9, 14, 1. – b) Ant. III. Magnus, als Beschützer des flüchtigen Hannibal u. bes. durch seine Kriege mit den Römern bekannt, von L. Corn. Scipio besiegt, 187 v. Chr. bei den Elymäern erschlagen, Nep. Hann. 2, 7. Cic. de or. 2, 75. – c) Ant. IV. Epiphanes (Επιφανής), derselbe, den der röm. Gesandte L. Popilius durch sein gebieterisches, trotziges Benehmen von der Besitznahme Ägyptens zurückschreckte, gest. 163 v. Chr., Cic. Phil. 8, 23 u.a. – d) Ant. X., dessen Sohn Antiochus XIII. mit seinen Brüdern nach Rom kam (73 v. Chr.), um die Ansprüche auf Ägypten geltend zu machen, u. bei dieser Gelegenheit auch Sizilien besuchte, Cic. Verr. 4, 61 sqq. – II) Name mehrerer Könige von Kommagene, deren (bes. des letzten) bei Tacitus u. Sueton Erwähnung geschieht, s. Tac. ann. 2, 42; 13, 7. Suet. Cal. 16, 3. – III) Ant. aus Askalon, Schüler des Philo, letzter Philosoph der akademischen Schule, Lehrer des Varro, Cicero u.a. zu Athen u. Rom, oft bei Cic., bes. Acad. 2, 61 sqq. – / arch.
