Branchus, ī, m. (Βράγχος), der von Apollo geliebte Sohn des Smikrus aus Delphi oder des Apollo selbst, der ihm die Weissagegabe schenkte, die er in Didyma, dem berühmt gewordenen Orakel der Branchiden, übte, Mythogr. Lat. 2, 85. Stat. Theb. 3, 479 u. 8, 198 (das. Schol. mit der Stelle des Varr.). – Dav.: A) Branchidae, ārum, m. (Βραγχίδαι), die Branchiden (= Nachkommen des Branchus), erbliche Diener u. Verwalter des Apollotempels und -orakels zu Didyma (Didymeon b. Curt., penetralia Branchi b. Stat.) im milesischen Gebiete, Curt. 7, 5 (23), 28 sqq.: oracula Branchidarum, Amm. 29, 1, 31: oppidum oraculum Branchidarum appellatum, nunc Didymaei Apollinis, Plin. 5, 112. – Sing.
