1. acanthus, ī (ἄκανθος), I) m. eine Pflanze, Bärenklau (Acanthus mollis, L.), als Bienenkraut bekannt, auch ihrer schön gewundenen Stiele wegen zur Einfassung der Gartenbeete häufig gepflanzt und auf Kunstwerken, Säulen und Gewändern nachgeahmt (vgl. Voß zu Verg. georg. 4, 123. p. 771 u. ecl. 3, 45. p. 97), Verg., Plin. u.a. – II) f. ein stachliger Baum in Ägypten, sonst auch acacia gen., von den Neuern für den ägyptischen Schotendorn (Mimosa nilotica, L., Acacia vera, Willd.) gehalten (vgl.
