(vgl. altind. talam, Fläche, ahd. dili, Brett, Diele), I) die Erde, als Körper betrachtet, 1) eig., Cic. u.a.: telluris hiatu, Liv. epit.: nunc solida est tellus, sed lacus ante fuit, Ov. – insbes.: a) der Fußboden, adoperta marmore, Ov.: molli tellus erat umida musco, Ov.: quo (sanguine) late tellas madefacta tepebat, Ov. – b) die Erde, insofern sie bebaut wird und Früchte trägt, der Erdboden, das Erdreich, die Oberfläche der Erde, sterilis, Ov.:ingrata, Hor.: umida, Ov. – 2) poet. übtr. = a) das Land, die Landschaft, Gegend, das Gebiet, Gnossia, Verg.: Achiva, Ov.: mea, mein Heimatland, Ov.: Iubae, Hor.: Plur. tellures, Länder, uno tellures dividit amne duas, Gall. poët. bei Vib.
