tēstū, indecl., u. tēstum, ī, n. (viell. = tostu, tostum, wie testa = tosta), I) das irdene Geschirr, -Gefäß, die irdene Schüssel, der Napf, a) eig., Varro LL. u. Ov.: insbes. zum Brotbacken (indem eine solche Schüssel über das Brot gedeckt u. mit heißer Asche überschüttet wurde), sub testu coquere, Cato: auch etwas heiß zu machen, fimo ovium sub testu calefacto, Plin.: et spumant (calices) uterque testu pressus suo, Ov. – b) übtr., ein Gefäß von Metall, sub aereo testo, Plin. 32, 81. – II) übh., etwas aus gebackener Erde, Form -um bei Sulpic.
